Rights 4 Gays

Post by Blackdunes »

So I was listening to Love is Real and thought, has John ever talked much about the meaning/impetus behind Rights for Gays and the "fence post" line? I mean I know it's referencing the Matthew Shepard incident but it seems to be phrased as a command. I don't figure John for a homophobe based on his mentions of the importance of human rights in his interviews and so on, but this seems to be more complex than just a gay rights song. Is he assuming the role of a character? Any insights/answers?

here's the post from his old blog

Ordinarly DemoBoot would never involve itself in pointless politicizing, especially in such obvious and ridculous ways as supporting pseudo-political music and posting defamatory pictures of that no-good-monkey Geroge Bush Jr. But this isn't ordinarly.

A few months ago my cohort in arms Karl showed me the most astounding thing I have ever seen (in respect to practical American politics, as opposed to impractical, but fun-to-talk-about politics), it was an American Presedential candidate by the name of Howard Dean fervently shouting and screaming.

This man had passion, he wasn't like all boring stiffs I was use to seeing in political positions. He was insanely demanding "rights for gays" and "health care for all Americans."

All moronic impratical banter and self-indulgent ranting aside, this was not only a truly interesting and "good" man, it was the next President of the United States as well.

So in honor of Govenor Howard Dean, I wrote this song, modeled slightly after my friend Ariel's "this is your love song."

:: DEAN FOR AMERICA MP3

Anyway, I hope you enjoy it, its the least I can do for the next President of the United states (and the first good one in years).

You are right. John wrote it as a campaign song for Howard Dean. Hence the lines: "the doctor is in, the doctor is in". Howard Dean is an MD. :nod: It is one of my favorite back stories concerning the songs on Love is Real.

Welcome, Pappamaus! :wave:
Supporting policies for universal healthcare and gay rights, it seems a shame to me this guy didn't get elected! Also a shame that the inspiration for John's song also seems to be what undid Dean's campaign, being cited as 'loud, peculiar and unpresidential' when he was only impassioned and struggling to be heard over the crowd noise whilst suffering with a severe flu!
Got to admit Howard Dean was well under my radar when he was running. I think I probably supported Ralph Nader at the time.
Just doing my research now and it seems the recent Clooney/Gosling film The Ides of March was based on Howard Dean's campaign!

This is the infamous clip. Apparently the media deliberately cut the background noise to make him appear mental. Sort of demonstrates how using mediums like this can be a double-edged sword: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RwkNnMrsx7Q

And here is a dance remix: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LNhb24iIEyQ
