Rights For Gays

rights for gays
oh yeah
rights for gays
oh yeah
right now
rights for gays
oh yeah

rights for gays
oh yeah
rights for gays
oh yeah
right now
rights for gays
oh yeah

comin' out
and [then they're/they're not] going to hell
tie 'em to a fence post
[no/so/but/then] you can take, take 'em to the bank

these homosexuals
and [then they're/they're not] going to hell
tie 'em to a fence post
[no/so/but/then] you can take, take 'em to the bank

rights for gays
oh yeah
rights for gays
oh yeah
right now
rights for gays
oh yeah

and medical care for everyone
the doctor is in
the doctor is in

these homosexuals

rights for gays
oh yeah
rights for gays
oh yeah
right now
rights for gays
oh yeah

I'd say it's a sadistic homoerotic wet dream. :)

I dunno, to me this is sort of a blight on an otherwise flawless record. I get that its 'supposed to be funny, and I laugh whenever I hear it. But it also makes me feel like Maus is succumbing to typical hipster-dude "that's gay" humor, like "hey, listen to this song where I sarcastically rally for rights for gays while offhandedly referencing the brutal murder of matthew shepard." Weak.

Has anyone actually heard him speak about this song? I think it is very straight to the point. . . I don't get any sarcasm. Anyway this song started off as my least favorite for sure, but it grew on me. Now I love it.

To me, this song is mocking the disinterest of heterosexuals in gay rights. But of course they'd never admit their indifference, instead they come out with a big "Oh yeah! Gay rights! So important!"
In broader terms, the lyrics attack low level politicisation... "Medical care for everyone! Bread for the world! One should do something!"

I agree with the post above
I recall reading or hearing John Maus talk about this song. If I remember correctly, he was talking about homosexuality and how in the last century it's become considered by some as a sort of cultural disease...like a newly formed minority...never mind that it was an embraced lifestyle in ancient civilizations...I think the song is addressing the fast rise of myopia pertaining to sexuality and equal rights in recent times...in general... I personally don't think there's anything ironic about the lyrics, but I could always be wrong.

The doctor is in!

Nevertheless, I've seen this song transform into a gay hymn when played live. The euphoria just sweeps away all the sub-layers and what stays is the mighty chorus. And a lot of happy faces! It's alright, a concert is a different situation.

And to add to the above post: ironic John Maus would be horrible, wouldn't it?
