I wouldn't take that too seriously Sophie, he's not got much to promote right now.
I'm committing to pulling myself out of the vortex of the mess of the last week (not just wrt Maus/Ariel but the whole politics COVID ongoing shitball) and have basically decided that John's music is more important to me than whatever is in his head, or knowing whether he's been redpilled by conspiracy videos or has secretly harboured horseshoe politics thoughts all along.
It's shit because I used to quite like the whole package - the thoughts, the shows, the records. He was a good example to me of how to balance theory and praxis to some degree, and was influential in helping me develop certain thoughts. I don't think I'll be looking for that from him anymore. But maybe my expectations were all unrealistic anyway.
With Ariel the whole thing might be a bit more serious. I'm not sure if the DC thing re-awoke old allegations and innuendo, or if there's a new wave coming to sink him. Weyes Blood and Ed Droste have had collabs pulled from the internet. Actually going out and doing shitty things (or having such serious allegations that I just don't know what is right or wrong, ie. Woody Allen) has historically been more likely to motivate me to forget about you artistically.
At least people have been pretty sound about it here. Was expecting some hardcore stans to shout me down.

I've been thinking about it less and less as the days go on. i still love music/art from some of shittiest people. It's just disappointing because i've grown to love them so much over the last decade or so. There's that tribal outlook that says "these are our guys"...bottom line is that there is no such thing as a perfect person. having too many expectations is a weakness, i suppose! I think it's good to make jokes too.
Ariel seems really invested in this trump stuff. I kinda hope he's mentally okay lately...

This seems like a healthy viewpoint. If I hadn't been stuck in the house and work had properly begun, I'd hope to attain such comparitive zen.AppTrans wrote: Thu Jan 14, 2021 1:35 pm I've been thinking about it less and less as the days go on. i still love music/art from some of shittiest people. the current Mrs Ariel was all over reddit defending Ariel from the same playbook as the previous one, who now hates him.

sorry for my ignorance, but who is mrs. ariel? i'm also not very familiar with reddit (i don't understand the layout)
i also can't help but think of the band John had. Poor Joe. I hope the rest of those guys are doing okay. I still communicate with the drummer's mom, who is a super sweet and awesome lady.
Anyway, i'm sure some of you guys recall all the stuff that Kika was saying when that was going down. she was very disparaging towards the band and had some really negative things to say
still not sure what happened during all of that...

yeah I remember Kika's accusations before and after Joe died (I also remember weird things like John starting an insta account to get through to her!) and I remember the extremely vicious things Jonathan said to Kika while things were still very fraught. Luke has also eradicated all mention of John on his insta and pretty much seems to pick up after that whole time. I don't think Jonathan is even on there anymore. There's clearly a story to be told.

Re: Ariel Pink ‘was at Capitol to show support for Trump’ as he and John Maus criticised for attending riot
I never knew the new girlfriend was defending him on Reddit too. She’s all over Twitter and Instagram. Reminding everybody that she is his new girlfriend and knows everything about him and what’s going on, even though they have only dated for not even a year. Lol. Someone made a comment that she must be getting paid by them because she won’t stop defending him. It’s such a shitshow to watch.
I missed out on the whole Instagram drama thing. But I did read that Kika was always posting very personal stuff about John. I’m not saying she’s not a victim but she reached out to random people and let’s them know that John is a madman and stuff. You think she is manipulating him? I know he’s a grown man but I’ve read his blog. He doesn’t seem to like himself much and maybe he feels stuck with certain friends or even her. Ariels mom did say that him and John are the best of friends, though.

agreed. anyway, I'm not entirely convinced that Ariel or John truly care about their fans, not that it personally matters to me.
I remember that interview with John (pitchfork or something?) about his disdain for record stores and how quick he was to issue a statement regarding that, to clarify the things he said. nothing like that regarding his attendance in DC. not that i've seen, anyway. a cryptic image of Edith Stein doesn't cut it.

Although I've continued to listen to JM's music over the years I don't really read any music press, don't use Reddit and am only sporadically on Twitter, so I really had no idea what was going on his life. I stumbled onto the news about the rally entirely by accident the other day which lead me to popping back on here for the first time in ages. Strange and sad to hear for the first time about his divorce and especially his brother's death. It's probably unfair of me to feel disappointed in someone because they don't fit an image I have that's based on meetings/interviews that are like a decade ago now
I'd like to believe we've all got the wrong end of the stick but those Twitter follows/likes speak volumes to me (especially in the absence of much else). But maybe it was always unrealistic to base part of my appreciation of an artist on some old version I'd carried of them as a person. I think I'll still be able to listen to and enjoy JM in the future, though I can't imagine sticking some on right now. I'd also feel weird recommending it to someone

instagram gone too (he was much more popular on there, he only had like 3k twitter followers until he became a Trumper, which jumped him to 5.5k)AppTrans wrote: Thu Jan 14, 2021 8:41 pm he's deleted his twitter account. no wonder why he adores trump so much

Think you are being very generous. If John was such a hard core Marxist that he is supporting forces that are violently hostile to communists, in the belief that it would ultimately increase the chances of a Marxist revolution, then he wouldn't be getting more and more into organised religion. Quite like those online tests you sometimes see that plot people's views onto a political compass. Just finished charting John's:oldtown wrote: Tue Jan 12, 2021 9:53 pmNot defending this, it's just sadly becoming very common for leftists to turn into what are basically pro-establishment conservatives because nothing short of total abolition of capitalism is seen as good enough. I knew a lot of leftists who refused to support the BLM protests because "nothing will change, corporations support them, why side with corporations?" etc.
