Thank you for the reply, appreciated!fieldmaus wrote: If I saw an insurance commercial with two people in a white room full of cash, laughing and throwing all of their ‘savings’ in the air while dancing to a disco song, and a vocoded voice sings, “whatcha gonna do with all of that money, whatcha gonna do, whatcha gonna do, put it in your pocket and you feel like john lennon.” -- Wouldn’t that be so sad and discouraging??? If a radical work, which (IMO) encourages an imagining and a pursuit of something much higher, in the way of love, and that supposes something completely other than global capitalism, would be forced by the those very entities of power to speak and give voice to what they would have it say, as apposed to the opposite of that???
In the case you're describing, it's up to John to make sure his art is not used in a way that he doesn't condone. For example, even within the Creative Commons "Attribution" license, which is very liberal and allows everyone to use the work for free, in exchange of just crediting, even in that license, there's a clause where the author can prohibit usage of his work if the derivative work "mutilates" or "distorts" the original work (exact wordings). So when even such a liberal license puts such restrictions, then in the case of direct licensing, it's up to John to put similar restrictions on how his work is used. If the potential licencees don't want to abide by such terms, then John has a real decision to make if he'll license to them or not. And unless he's starving, he shouldn't.
So basically, it's a case by case deal, rather than wholesale licensing his art and ending up with bad surprises.

He's on disability now. I saw him on a motorized shopping cart at Wal Mark...he was buying a plain sweatshirt. He told me of his new pastime: he's been overdubbing Crash Test Dummies albums with his own voice.
of course, I'm a real bad liar

Since I go to their shows so frequently, I am always asking the London Upset the Rhythm crew if they have any news on our Mr Maus. It is all speculation only at this point. He is very particular and I admire that. It may take more time, but as some philosopher once said: they call me the believer.
