I preordered mine from the UK and was pretty lucky to have my copy by June 13th, several days before the official release date. As someone who greedily sought out all the demos and unreleased tracks I could find prior to news of this compilation, I am thrilled to be able to have most of my favorites all together at last. I am of the opinion that many of these rarities are on par with John's regular album tracks, Mental Breakdown being my top pick of the moment. I am especially pleased to find the bit of polish on these demos in no way detracted from the haunting loveliness of the originals in all their murky glory. There are still some of the unofficial songs I wish would resurace somewhere down the line (Enterprise anyone?), but I'm over the moon with this compilation.

Pitchfork approval:

http://pitchfork.com/reviews/albums/168 ... -material/

The review is about Mausspace as much as the album. I feel like I've been prodded by some muso-scientist.

The RE: How Are You? is totally legit. The emails he's sent me are similarly long, thorough, honest, wordy, fucking interesting, and you guys saw the old demoboot site. You all knew John is (or was/will be) actually insane, right?

My favorite part was when he emails her a surrealist H.R.Giger sex fantasy thing. That is SO John Maus. Love Letters from Hell.
That would have charmed the pants right off me.

Kinda an interesting footnote to some here. These were the tracks that we (myself/jessi/adri) liked from the demos sent before the release of We Must Become the Pitiless Censors...

Jessi -
i mentioned Fantastic Light, No Title (Molly) and Fuck the Earth as ones that i especially thought would be great on the album.

i also listed like 8 more of the additional tracks tracks that i thought were really good too and said basically that he could combine almost any selection of all of the tracks he sent us and it would make a beautiful album.

and i thought all the tracks he had on the lp so far were excellent.
Adri -
I told him Quantum Leap, Keep Pushing On, and Rain were my favorites from the ones he chose for the album. And that The Believer, Cop Killer, and No Title (Somewhere there's a crime...) were my favorites overall and if it were up to me, I'd put them on the LP. Other definite "yes" votes were No Title (Molly) and I Don't Eat Humans. I said some stuff about each other track too, but those were the ones I most liked.
Me -
Pretty much identical to you Adri.

Fave album tracks: Quantum Leap, Hey Moon!
Fave other tracks: Cop Killer, I don't eat human beings, No Title (Molly), No Title (Somewhere, theres a crime being committed), and definitely The Believer!!

...What? Does Pitchfork just pull stuff out of the air, or is this in the liner notes or an intervew?
