Aside from the fact that my friend lost her iPhone, another friend losing his keys in a cab, and a $100 cab ride home, the show last night was fucking amazing! John was chatting with people after the show and stating his dislike for performing bigger fest-type shows like FYF Fest and the show at the pier in NY a couple of days ago. I took a picture with him but have to get my film developed still, but I am really excited about that.

So, guys, after all that, I never made it to the NYC show... bummer. I couldn't get the days off of work, we're insanely busy in the summertime. I would rather see John perform at a smaller venue, which makes the fact that I missed his show last year at exactly THAT sort of venue all the more painful. Ricky, I cannot wait for a full run-down of the show and your pic with him! Very nice that you got to chat with him, I hear he is just such a nice guy.

Regarding that re: response to that Ad Hoc guy -- yeah, WHOA. I STILL have yet to get through his entire 24,000 word response, and at first I wasn't even sure it was really him, or just some hoax, but there are too many accurate details in there for it not to be really him. What I read made me really think -- some of it shocked me, some of it scared me, made me laugh, stirred up old passions, made me feel heartbroken/
incredibly sad, then hopeful, then not, then hopeful and fortified again, sort of akin to the experience of listening to his music. If John Maus actually reads any of this Mausspace page, I guess what I would want him to know is this: YOU APPEAR... don't worry, you appear, in the BEST, most admirable of ways. I'm not trying to suck up -- I could not mean this more geniunely (or I guess, I wouldn't be here, any way, right).

He definitely is nice. He didn't mind taking a picture with anyone who wanted one and he told us his secret to taking pictures. Geneva Jacuzzi taught him to say "prune" (I think that was the word), when taking pictures, because you can't make a dumb face while saying that word. There might have been more to that explanation, but it was late and I had drank a lot.

The crowd at Casbah was really cool last night. Last year when I saw him at the same venue, it was a bit more empty and people seemed to "not get" him too well. Last night was different, and most of the crowd went crazy and I personally tried to give back as much energy as John gives the crowd during his performance. I was drenched in sweat after the show.

He said that he is going to talk to "his guy" to see if he can play at the Echo/Echoplex in LA, instead of doing FYF Fest. I have tickets to FYF fest, mostly to see other bands there, but I would rather see him at the Echo.

I was going to go to the NYC show too but I was deep in perocoronitis and couldn't imagine moving.

The RE: How Are You? is totally legit. The emails he's sent me are similarly long, thorough, honest, wordy, fucking interesting, and you guys saw the old demoboot site. You all knew John is (or was/will be) actually insane, right?

You should really read it all slowly, in several sittings, it's totally :kebab: . I could definitely go back and read the whole thing a little more carefully and get a lot more out of it.

He says he's done tonal analysis, but does that mean he's done covers of Strange Fires and Trepanated Earth? These two really screamed at me too when I first got into Ariel.

My favorite part was when he emails her a surrealist H.R.Giger sex fantasy thing. That is SO John Maus. Love Letters from Hell.

Is Lost (2003) the future fear song he was looking for on a blog a while back? Pretty sure it's 12 tone...lotta tones in there.

Does anyone else really not like the new mix of Bennington? Is the whole thing badly mixed? I know, it's supposed to be bad, but I mean, bad and also not good? Is the dredged version of mental breakdown the greatest thing? The breakdown at 3:00 is unbelievable. John did that sort of thing really well, especially in the old version of love letters from hell ("chattering like horesplay").

So some say. I don't find him insane at all. I just find him different, and very inspirational. A breath of fresh air in an overpopulated mass filled with boring, me-too humans.

I was too freaked out to talk to John at the show last year...I feel like I'd come off as stupid. He'd probably laugh and think "you dweeb"
I talked to Ariel before and that felt awkward...I just said the stupidest things. Usually what happens. Oh well at least he approached me and wasn't the other way around :arms:
well did you get a picture with him?

album is great, many songs re-recorded (i prefer the older versions of "bennington" and "molly"), nice thing to have.

6/10 from NME:
Even in the well-stocked haberdashery that is popular music, John Maus is cut from pretty strange cloth. Sometime keyboardist for Animal Collective and Ariel Pink’s Haunted Graffiti, Maus – by day, a philosophy professor from Minnesota – claims inspiration from Gregorian chant, critical theory, and classical composers Handel and Schoenberg. The charts, as you might expect, do not tremble at his approach. But this rag-tag collection, dating from between 1999 and 2010, sets out his stall as an outsider savant in an Ariel Pink vein, the likes of ‘Castles In The Grave’ and ‘Mental Breakdown’ spiriting something vivid out of blurry VHS-quality synths and Maus’ sad, Ian Curtis-like tremor – although there is a moment midway through the naggingly silly ‘This Is The Beat’ when you find yourself wondering if this is what Keyboard Cat did next.
